After painting the initial BC Stern I was commissioned
to paint another, similarly to the 1st. I decided however not to go with
'chrome' armour this time around and instead went with grey. IMO the sculpt
is busy enough that it doesn't lose anything through having plain armour,
there's more than enough sculpted detail to still make it interesting.
After painting the armour I decided that blue would be more appropriate
for the material than the red used on the original Stern and I think it
probably worked better in the end. FYI the blue was Vallejo 'royal blue'
with Vallejo 'dark prussian blue' added for shadows - both were fantastic
to work with which is always nice.
The customer wanted a base similar to the 1st but I couldn't bring myself
to copy it completely so I sculpted some milliput to look like a battered
drain with paperclip wire cut to size for the grate. After the milliput
had hardened slightly I set to it with a pin vice and hobby knife to create
the damage. The slimy water is white glue added in layers, every couple
of layers I would mix some paint with the glue and place drops of the
coloured glue in the straight glue and then run a pin through it to create
streaks in the water. It's difficult (impossible) to see in the pics but
there are streaks of green and brown at different levels which helps to
create the illusion of depth. |
