I'd always really liked Thierry Husser's (Arkaal) version of this miniature so I was mindful not to subconsciously (or consciously) copy it. I decided that the best way to accomplish this was by using metallics instead of NMM. Confrontation miniatures have always been strongly associated with NMM but recently I'd seen a few well painted with metallics and thought it suited them just as well. I hadn't really gone all out using metallics on anything before (the GK terminators were painted to a tabletop standard) so I was a little apprehensive about trying them out on such a large miniature. Through a bit of experimentation I came up with a method that produced pretty good results on large surface areas. It basically involved base coating the area with boltgun metal and then glazing it with various colours mixed with VMC metallic medium and thinned with VMC matte medium. Adding the metallic medium just ensures that the area maintains its metallic sheen. I really liked how it turned out especially for a first effort but I wished I had of taken the shadows down a bit darker than I did just to increase the contrast.
