The red lioness

mounted version
I don't think I'd be exaggerating by saying that I've never been happier to finish a miniature. Painting two Alahan Cavalry miniatures and then the Red Lioness consecutively isn't my idea of fun...

In all honestly this isn't a miniature to take too lightly, it's highly detailed and as with GWs horses it comes in two halves which means filling is necessary (it is metal though and beautifully sculpted, two things GW horses could benefit from). Unfortunately mine was also miscast with parts of the horse needing to be re-sculpted. The Red Lioness herself is very fragile with even more fine detail than the horse. That said it is a very striking miniature when finished.

As I mentioned above, the horse is amazing, the sculpt just oozes grace and power. It really is pretty close to being the best sculpt I've ever seen. Unfortunately the rider isn't up the the same standard... it's well detailed but the pose is very rigid and quite unnatural.

Not too much to say about the paintjob... I used a mix of Vallejo and Reaper paints with some GW inks thrown in. Reaper paints are fantastic for the type of layering which I do, they're not as smooth as Vallejo but because of this you can 'feather' the edge of each layer so that the transitions aren't at all obvious...

on foot version
Another very stylish miniature by Rackham, you could certainly criticise the proportions and the awkward pose but it still looks good and i guess that's the main thing.

I thought I'd go with the title of this miniature and paint it almost entirely red, I know most people would like to see a contrasting colour but I was curious as to how it'd look. The tabbard may have looked better if it was a different colour but I'm still pretty happy. I was particularly happy with the face, it really was beautifully sculpted and I (for a change) didn't mess it up. I also had another go at the Earth-Sky technique onthe blade which turned out OK.
